Friends and clients will often ask; what is the secret to putting together a space that feels professionally designed? The answer I give is always the same- great spaces are built on a balance of tone, tailoring, and texture. People are often drawn to something, a particular fabric pattern or furniture piece, but they are unsure of how to build the rest of the space from there. So often people are drawn into buying furniture sets as a result of this so that ‘everything matches’. Rather than matching, use your first piece as your inspiration, and then layer the look from there. If you are drawn to an old-fashioned patterned fabric, use it to upholster a modern chair and create a more tailored look. Next, use your inspirational fabric to pull out a color palette and layer these colors into your other pieces keeping in mind that all the colors you select should be in the same tone – all bright colors, all earth tones, all neutrals, and so on. Finally, utilize different textures and pattern scales to create a comfortable and curated look. Mix linens and silks, damasks and stripes, all in your inspirational palette. The end result will be a space that feels intentional and energetic…and almost professionally designed.
